Black Bamboo Chasen (Takayama, Nara)

A chasen made by a master whisk-maker in Takayama, Nara — the town at the center of the craft. Roughly nine out of ten chasen made in Japan are said to come from here.
The bamboo is harvested in Takayama's hard winter and dried before work begins. Each tine is then pared down one at a time, by hand, until the tips are thin enough to flex — supple, springy, and still strong enough to last. This is the Japanese whisk at its finest.
A chasen is a tool that wears with use, but treated with care, it will serve you well beyond a year.
We hope it becomes your companion in the daily bowl of usucha.
